The Journey to Wellness of an Orofacial Myofunctional Disordered Patient

adut case 1

When Jeff first saw the CO₂llaborative team, his main concerns were digestive issues and the impact of his history of head and neck injuries, including concussions. His journey to myofunctional healing and wellness began in July 2021. This is his journey so far! To keep up with Jeff, follow his Instagram @jeffrey.c.sorensen

Patient History

Jeff came to CO₂llaborative Care + Research 18 years after an accident that altered the trajectory of his myofunctional health and wellness. Jeff was involved in a work accident in 2003 that fractured his skull and left him with serious misalignment in his jaw and skull. Although this was a traumatic accident for Jeff, this was just one of many incidents involving trauma to his face, mouth, and brain. Along with this, for the last 15 years, Jeff has struggled with digestive issues. He has felt a long-standing presentation of sleep apnea, waking often from sleep feeling as though he had not been breathing. With interest in alignment, health, breath, and cranial assessment, Jeff began his journey with our team to find myofunctional balance .

Our Treatment Plan

After assessing Jeff, our team noticed myofunctional, skeletal, and systemic dysfunction. Our Cranial Sacral collaborator, Glenda Hart, felt little to no movement in his cranium. With this information, Dr. Pada and her team determined that placing an ALF appliance would be the first step towards myofunctional balance. This will be in combination with myofunctional exercises, a sleep assessment, craniosacral therapy, and a functional frenuloplasty.

Release + Relief: ALF Appliance

After placing Jeff’s lower ALF appliance, Dr. Pada observed expansion in cranial rhythm on his left. When placing his upper appliance, Dr. Pada felt his temporal rotations balance, his sphenoid become level and free, his cheekbones balanced, and his cranial rhythm expanding and contracting. Jeff explained to Dr. Pada his immediate experience as a shifting and lifting on his right, feeling release in his entire system and in his right shoulder. Jeff referred to this experience as a feeling of alignment in his body and energy systems.
